Coffee with Mom

Nikki picked up her coffee cup and took a sip, her eyes never left her Mother’s face. They were seated in the back on the large couches of Blackbird Java. No one else was there other than the college student in the corner and the barista, both too far away to pick up on their conversation. Nikki placed her cup down deliberately keeping eye contact with her Mom.

“Tell me what’s going on.” She couldn’t keep the apprehension from her voice, but hoped her Mom wouldn’t pick up on it.

“What do you think is happening Sweetie?” Her Mom waited.

“I think those stories you told me are true.”

Her Mom’s nod was barely perceptible. Nikki tried not to choke on the coffee she’d just swallowed.

“You mean to tell me there really are vampires and werewolves? That it’s real?”

Her Mom dropped her eyes to the tabletop, “Yes. I was hoping that you’d never have to know. But just in case, I need to share those stories, just in case you entered their world. I just hoped that you would never find out they were real, but they are, and you can use that knowledge now, use it to stay alive.”

“Why?” Nikki’s voice was barely audible.

“Because, I wanted you safe. You’re my daughter. I don’t want to see you get hurt.”

“How could I possibly avoid it if I don’t know what to guard against? Mom, I was bitten last night, he took my blood. What if he’d killed me?”

Her Mom’s eyes flashed up, and she shook her head. “That could never happen.”

Disbelief edged Nikki’s voice, “What do you mean, that could never happen?”

Her Mom fidgeted with her coffee mug.

“Mom? What did you mean?”

The woman Nikki thought she knew, leaned in close like she didn’t want anyone else to hear what she had to reveal, not that anyone could. “You’re father.” Her Mom’s eyes darted around.

Nikki waited, but her Mom didn’t say more. Frustrated, Nikki set her cup down. “What about my father, Mom? I haven’t seen the man in years.”

Her mom took a deep breath, and Nikki watched as her eyes turned sorrowful, filled with regret. “You can’t die like that. Your body wouldn’t allow it.” Another deep breath, “Your father is a werewolf.”

Nikki stood in her seat then sat right back down. “What?”

“Your dad is a werewolf. It runs in your blood.”

Nikki was overwhelmed. The cup in her hands turned cold, and the taste of coffee in her mouth turned to ash. Realization began to dawn on her. She’d always been faster, stronger than she should be at her size. Her vision and sense of smell better. This made so much sense. But why didn’t her mom tell her before now? Nikki knew why, she would have thought the woman was crazy. No way would she believe vampires and werewolves were real, not until last night when Damon visited her apartment. You couldn’t get any more real than that. Her fingers went up to her neck that was discretely covered by a silk scarf.
